The Social Issue
Given the global impact of climate change, the infrastructure of our cities and settlements must be built or improved with sustainability in mind. Green building policies that drive this agenda are key to achieving this, ensuring the intelligent production and responsible use of resources.
The Challenge
Reduce complexity and translate technical policy information about the green built environment into understandable information pieces.
The Science
Used a global and local evidence base to understand the problem and context to discover the barriers to engagement with the policy.
Explored what currently worked and what was missing (gap analysis).
The Insights
Applied behavioural insights to inform an intervention designed to overcome the barriers and friction faced by the public around green building policy.
Designed targeted messaging and developed an information hub to drive awareness and public participation.
The Intervention
BCA created and built a custom digital hub to tell the green building story in a way that was simple, salient… and local.
The portal’s smart design was shaped by applying behavioural insights to enable interaction, dialogue and feedback between stakeholders and between stakeholders and the public.
While the hub was designed to provide access to information, a key criterion was to ensure that the portal went beyond being a tool for information and became an inclusive platform that inspired action; a portal that worked across the strata of South African citizenry.
To achieve this BCA translated complex, dense content into simple, understandable information pieces as hooks to get citizens to engage with green building policies and bylaws.
BCA also designed toolkits and resources to support the community for meaningful public engagement, which were housed on the portal.
The Impact
We nudged South Africans to participate in greening our built environment through public participation in the policy development process.
